Swimming Lessons increase safety around the pool and lake while also building confidence in the young swimmers, gaining experience, and knowledge around the water.
At the Boonville (BHYMCA) we offer Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Group Swim Lessons as well as Private and Family Lessons.
Group Lessons: The instructor will work with up to 6 youth in a small group setting. Youth are divided by skill level when registering for lessons. Our lessons run in one-month sessions, and lessons are offered year-round.
Beginner Lessons-For ages 3 and up. This level is for children with limited experience in the pool or who hesitate to submerge their head underwater. These lessons will focus on floating front and back, getting comfortable getting head under water, learning how to move away from the wall and back again, and jumping from the side of the pool. Must be toilet-trained.
Intermediate Lessons-This level is for children who have the ability to get in the water by themselves, are comfortable putting their face in the water with or without goggles, already float on their back, and can move independently from the wall and back. These lessons will focus on developing core strength, swim techniques for front crawl, and using a kickboard.
Advanced Lessons-This level is for children who are comfortable swimming in the deep end of the pool, can move forward in the water by themselves and have the basic technique of the front crawl and basic backstroke. These lessons will focus on improving swim technique and building strength and endurance to swim the entire length of the pool. This level also builds the foundation for swimmers to move onto the swim team.
You may register for group swim lessons online, in-person, or by calling the Y at 660-882-8500. To register for private or family lessons, please contact our Aquatics Coordinator, Christy, at christyr@bhymca.org.
Private Lessons- These are lessons scheduled 1 on 1 with an instructor. Private lessons offer more flexibility in scheduling as long as the preferred instructor is available.
Family Lessons- Family lessons offer families with 2 to 3 kids to schedule lessons together. This is a good option when the swimmers are of a similar level of skill. If your children vary in skill, group lessons may be more appropriate.
